Xiamen is situated on the South East coast of China within China's Fujian province. It overlooks the Taiwan Strait with Quanzhou located to the north and Zhangzhou situated to the south. Also known by the English as Amoy, it is a very pretty coastal region packed with mountainous areas and islands joined together with bridges. A former seaport with a most reliable harbor its name can be translated from the Chinese as meaning "Gate of China". As a result of its magnificent scenery it has become an extremely popular holiday destination. In order to cater for the many tourists there are a whole host of five star hotels Xiamen now offers. The Chinese appreciate this area themselves and have voted it China's second most suitable city for living in 2002 and also China's cleanest city.
Xiamen and its surrounding areas are very picturesque with its tree lined beaches and magnificent countryside. The island of Gulangyu had previously acted as an enclave for foreign dignitaries. The Victorian colonial architecture of the area reflects its history and is worth seeing. Also known as "Piano Island", Gulangyu is very popular with local musicians and gentle piano music can often be heard wafting through the streets of the island which is generally peaceful and quiet due to the lack of motorized vehicles on its streets. Every May there is an international music festival held here and many piano competitions take place in the meantime.
The Nanputuo Temple can be found at the foot of the Wulaofeng (Five Old Men Mountain); it faces the sea and has wonderful scenic views. It is an ancient Buddhist temple that has been rebuilt over the years and is still home to a group of monks. As well as the fabulous oriental architecture tourists can also see many magnificent antique sculptures, ivory statues and religious murals. In addition, visitors are invited to partake of the vegetarian cuisine that is served by the monks on a daily basis. The Hulishan Battery houses a group of old military buildings mostly used between the years 1900 and 1937 during defensive movements against Japan. The battery may be of interest to many tourists who appreciate history and or military museums. Another museum which may be of interest in Xiamen is the Rongguang museum; this presents general Chinese history and has displays of ancient firecrackers (a Chinese invention), a plethora of guns, swords and cannons. In fact, the world's smallest cannon is housed within the museum. For those who are more interested in natural history there are the Botanical Gardens. Shopping is a popular activity in Xiamen; there are various shopping malls, department stores and commercial areas. There are special markets trading throughout the dark night time hours and selling a selection of local products such as fruit, sugar canes, olives, all sorts of tea leaves and seafood products. Around the university campuses there are both supermarkets and book shops that are open 12 hours a day from 9am-9pm. Zhongshan Lu is the name of the main commercial street in Xiamen. It includes the latest chic fashion and shoe shops. Other shopping areas can be found in Xiahe Lu, a newly established precinct and the Bailuzhou Shopping and Recreational Center where there are a huge assortment of shops and busy restaurants.
There are various effective ways to travel to this popular destination. Xiamen Gaoqi International airport is on Xiamen island and convenient to the down town area which is only a 20 minute taxi ride away. One can also reach Xiamen via a ferry; there is a service into the harbor hourly from 8.30am-5.30 on a daily basis. There are also buses and trains (the famous bullet train being an option) in an out of the city daily.
